The album was originally released on vinyl and cassette, the CD followed in October. An album advert in Kerrang! (issue no. 50, dated September 8-21) reads:
RAINBOW
BENT OUT OF SHAPE
NEW ALBUM
& CHROME CASSETTE
Includes ‘Street Of Dreams’
SOON TO BE AVAILABLE ON COMPACT DISC
AVAILABLE NOW
Billboard’s ‘New LP/Tape Releases’ listing (10 September) included, with no mention of a CD:
LP 815 305-1
CA 815 305-4
There were only a few CD releases that week: Police’s Synchronicity, Cat Stevens’ Greatest Hits, etc.
An article in Billboard (in October) on the still mainly classical and MOR UK CD market mentioned “imminent releases” from Presley, Police, Joe Jackson, The Carpenters, Manilow, The Kinks, Moody Blues, Rainbow, Abba and Men At Work and the forthcoming simultaneous LP/cassette/CD release of new product by Status Quo (Back To Back) and ABC (Beauty Stab) – both were released in November.
Thank you Nigel for your informative reply!
Hi Roger! Could you please help me with some historical question about “Bent Out Of Shape” album you produced? Do you remember the time it was released (September of 1983)? I am tormenting long time with though question: Had it been released simultaneously in Vinyl LP, CD and cassette MC versions? Many people claims that CD version came out few years later and 1983 was too early for a CD. Sounds logical, but i have this original very early CD version in my hands with heavy smooth sided jewel case and all other attributes what pretty well fits to earliest Polydor CDs from that era.
Also i have on my hands two paper CD catalogues where’s written:
1. September 1983
2. September 1984
as release date for CD version.
I also checked covers of original UK Vinyl version from September of 1983 (grey cover, not green as CD) and on back cover of it also printed catalogue numbers for casette and compact dics format.
So where’s the truth?
