Bass Player’s Question Time delay

All those holding their breath while waiting to see their questions answered, here’s a note from RG:

To all those who have sent in questions, I apologize for the delay in replying. Don’t give up on me, I will get to all of them very soon. My time has been taken up trying to find the secret of life – I’ve made a few inroads but can’t report any significant advance. So far!

Good luck,

RG

    Hi Roger,
I’m thinking about buying an old Hondo Double Neck 4/8 string Bass that’s come up for sale. While I was researching it, I found a blurb for the Rainbow “Straight between the Eyes” album which has you credited as playing a Hondo Longhorn 4 & 8 string Bass. I’m assuming it’s the same model as the one I’m looking at; just wondering if you have any recollections of how it played & felt; and if you still own it, how well it’s stood the test of time?
I have a thing for the old Danelectro style Instruments (one of my favourite recording Basses is a Jerry Jones Longhorn), so I’m really curious to see what sort of potential this old Girl has.
    Cheers; Dash.

Ever since I heard John Entwhistle’s solo on My Generation, I loved the Danelctro sound and look. I was in Manny’s on 48th St in New York when I first saw a Hondo Longhorn bass that had a similar look. I bought it and played it on that album. Later, I bought the double neck but it never felt that great to me, the balance was off. I don’t have it any more but I still own the 4 string, although I haven’t played it in some time.

Thanks for the reply Roger; appreciate your time.
Funnily enough, I found the same thing with the Hondo; had a play of it & it just didn’t sit well. Ended up passing on it.
        Cheers mate; Dash.

    Hi Roger,

I asked myself for 1,5 decade why didn´t dp perform “April” during the 2000 concerto tour. Along with “Child in time” it´s one of the most beloved early dp songs.

    thanxx for the answer
    greetings

    Hi Roger
Just wondering if you remember hanging at the Limelight in Chicago during the 80’s? You, Ian, my friend & myself. Oh and David Coverdale was there. If I remember correctly David & Ian almost got into it. You called me at work and gave me tickets and all access passes to 2 shows.

Yes, it is somewhere lodged in my random access memory. I called you at work? I’m impressed.

Hi Roger, i have a very vague memory of you appearing on Top of the Pops with Kiki Dee, performing `Star` is this correct or a trick of my memory? I have looked on Youtube but failed to find it. Thanks for the pleasure you`ve provided me and my friends for over 40 years. Gary Barton.

Doesn’t ring any bells. I’ve been on the same bill as Kiki Dee and maybe even been on TOTP at the same time, but never worked with her.

Thanks for your patience, Gordon. During MH Ritchie played mostly through a Marshall stack but his Vox AC30 was there as well. I am pretty sure POH was with the Marshall.

    Hi Roger staff or other
I intend to buy an Excess RG Original bass. The other day I tried one in Switzerland. Fantastic the way hand and fingers slide on that neck. Q; Does the neck tend to become greasy as it is not varnished like e.g. Jazz Bass? How should one clean it?
Not much of a scientific question I agree, but I have not yet found an answer to it. Thanks in advance
    Kind regards
    Gerhard

I don’t know much about cleaning it. The only thing I do on a hot gig when my fingers get sticky is put a little talcum powder on the neck.

Please x 10 x 10 x 10 to the power of ten….. would you please tell me (us) what amp did Ritchie use on the Machine Head album.
Was it a Vox ac30 Or a Marshall Major. I’ve spent the better part of 35 years wondering this and I’m praying you will help answer this, please!!!

Thanks for you persistence, Gordon. RB certainly had his Vox AC30 there although he used the Marshall for most of the tracks. It’s real test of memory, so I can’t give you a definitive answer for that song. However, I remember he used both the Vox and the Marshall on Lazy and there’s a moment somewhere when the switch can be discerned. Now, there’s a challenge…

I would also add that the switch in Lazy was from his Gibson 335 to the Srat. Now I’m not so sure about the amp change, maybe it was just the guitars.

          Roger

          Thank you !!!!!

I just saw this, and it’s completely made my year. I just had a heart operation and flirted (and still will) the final curtain, and this has made the journey that much more precious.

Sounds trite, perhaps, but Thank You so very much for all your contributions to the music, your passion, your attention to your craft of making fantastic music all these years.

Btw every part of Machine Head you played on, is every bit as important as any other members contribution. And I hope you realize the difference you’ve made in lives (at least mine) is profound and immeasurable.

I listen to that album every time I’m down, ill, and wondering the what of it all. It helps.

          Thanks
